The intensity of any conflict, whether it be psychological, physical, or strategic, is determined by an invisible pulse or rhythm. Tempo refers to the pace and rhythm of interactions in conflict, competition, or communication. Controlling tempo means deciding who leads and who follows, like conducting a mix of action and pause. Each situation requires its own strategic tempo.
In combat and other forms of competition, tempo is one of the most important subtle elements. It deals with choosing when to act, when to rest, when to connect, and when to hold back. This requires psychological control as well as precise timing, which - in a martial arts context - is gained the more you spar and feel different fighting rhythms.
